A Poster Problem in Fountain Valley High School

Last week was about a event in Europe was it not? Let’s talk about a bit of a local event. To be specific, my home city, Fountain Valley. Currently, there is a stir that has been caused in Fountain Valley High School. Here’s a bit of background information on this story. In the Huntington Beach Union High School District, there is a rivalry between two sister schools. The two schools are Edison High School and Fountain Valley High School. This rivalry has lasted for many years now. Currently, this rivalry is shown the most in the football game that occur every year. In this football game, whichever school wins the game will gain the trophy for a year. The trophy is a bell. In the week before the game, each school celebrates an event called Bell Week. The students of each school show their pride by participating in the fun events that occur throughout the week. Each school is decorated with posters made by the students. This is where this problem starts. The posters made by the students show the pride of being a student of the school, but there are small insults made against the other school in the posters. These posters poke fun at the rival school, but some of those posters are just flat out insults. One girl was not happy with this and took matters into her own hands. A girl by the name of Isabelle Abbott decided to rip down a poster that said, “Edison girls don’t shave.” This was recorded and later uploaded on Twitter by a friend. She is not ripping the poster down because it is making fun of Edison girls. She is ripping down the poster because she believes that it is shaming girls’ bodies. She believes that girls should not be ashamed for having hairy legs. This fiasco has caused people to take sides on whether or not her action is justified. I don’t want to get thrown into this fire, but if I were to give an opinion on this matter, I would say that she had a reason that could be supported, but the way she acted on this matter was inappropriate. Isabelle stated that she did talk to an Associated Student Body member about this, but it is later found out that she had two of her friends talk to a member about this. She then proceeds to tear it down the following day. She could have gone about this a little less violently. In my honest opinion, this could have gone a bit better than what actually happened. Baron News, the online newspaper for Fountain Valley High School, does good job talking about the event and also provides a small article written by Isabelle herself on how she feels about this. I recommend seeing both these articles. Well this is the end to this little post. I hope you enjoyed reading this.

A Crisis in Europe

Ah, the European Migrant Crisis. A tragic event that is still occurring to this day. Also called the European Refugee Crisis. If you didn’t know about the European Migrant Crisis, then here is a short summary on it. Basically, a large number of people from countries from the Middle East and Africa are trying to migrate to Europe. Many of the migrants are either coming from poor countries and they are trying to find better jobs in Europe or coming they are from war torn countries and are trying to flee to Europe to seek refuge. These unfortunate souls have to make the journey towards Europe, fleeing their homes to try to have a better life. It is a sad tale. I do hope for their survival. There is a slight problem that is in their way though. Actually, it is more like a combination of several problems. People that want to enter into Europe must submit an application to be eligible to enter Europe. The European Union can only bring in a limited amount of people. Some countries have many citizens have xenophobia, the dislike or fear of people from other countries, which causes the those countries to prohibit the entrance of any of the refugees. There are also some economic problems that come with inviting immigrants to Europe that I won’t go into detail. In the past year, there have been around 600,000 applications sent to European Union. Of those applications, only less than 200,000 of those applications were accepted. Those who don’t get accepted must be sent out of Europe. Many try to enter Europe illegally, but most of those attempts fail. They sometimes lead to unnecessary deaths of innocent people. This is the worst migrant crisis since World War II. Unfortunately, there is no simple solution to this problem. It can’t be fixed with a simple wave a magic wand. The European Union is faced with a terrible situation. The right thing to do is to admit all applications that are sent to them, but if they admit them all, the Union will face an economic and social crisis. The Union is stuck between a rock and a hard place. There have been over 300,000 new applications that have been submitted this year. If only this can be solved with a few clicks of the heels of a ruby pair of shoes. If only this problem was this simple.

Huntington Beach High School Beating From a Different View

Recently, a student from Huntington Beach High School was seen beating a blind kid. A video of this beating went viral online within a few hours of the beating. Many news sites and local news stations immediately reported on this event, but there were a few things that they forgot to mention. Almost every place that mentions the beating has a title somewhere along the lines of, “Student Protects Blind Classmate From Bully.” This title is very misleading. The articles written about this always portray the “blind” kid as the victim and the “bully” as the villain. Let’s look at a bit of context shall we. I did a bit of research and found some interesting information. Austin, the “victim”, is not completely blind. He is legally blind. Being legally blind means that the person’s ability to see is to such a degree that it cannot be fixed by normal means. Austin can see, but he cannot see as well as others. There is also a bit of past between Austin and Noah, the “villain”. From the information of Kayla Landeros, a classmate, Austin was hitting on Noah’s girlfriend and he was talking bad about Noah. She claims that Austin was the one who initiated the fight and Noah simply stood up for himself. The are multiple sources supporting that Austin was the one who initiated the fight including from Noah himself. She claims that Cody, the boy who punched Noah, was the real villain because he almost killed Noah. I must admit that the sources that I got these pieces of information are not that reliable. All the information was found online so there is no telling if these were lies or not. There were people that knew Noah that tried to defend him so that presents biased pieces of information. Kayla Landeros contradicts herself in her own statement. Unfortunately, there is no real conclusion to this story. People just make assumptions and post it online which causes a bunch of misleading information. Everyone has their own perspective on these things. If Austin was really provoking Noah, Noah could have been the bigger man and ignored Austin or perhaps Noah saw Austin as a threat to him and his girlfriend and that is why he retaliated like he did. Maybe Cody saw a bully hurting a defenseless boy and that is the reason he punched Noah. Cody could have just tried to diffuse the situation by talking or getting in between the two, but stopping the fight like that is incredibly idealistic. There is not a true view of the situation and that is perfectly fine.
